Use Cases
Storage Delivery Service
GeoStratus Storage Delivery Service (SDS) dramatically reduces time-to-market fo integrating storage to online media applications. Accessible through standard web services, SDS provides Internet-scale storage, optimized for media. SDS is the first to provide full file system capabilities for managing files and folders, integrating end-user accounts and media processing.
Demand for digital media applications
The rapid growth in popularity of Web 2.0 and other user-generated content applications is driving the demand for cost-effective, massively scalable online storage. With 300 million broadband subscribers worldwide in 2007 expected to grow to 570 million by 2011, the demand for creating, sharing and storing user generated digital media online is exploding. Driven by explosive growth of user generated content, digital media is expected to increase six-fold, from 161 exabytes in 2006, to 988 exabytes by 2010 (Source: IDC 2007).
Challenges for building media applications
Traditional storage systems were designed for traditional data, which is mostly structured, text-based, and often stored in databases. Media-centric content, in contrast, is mostly unstructured data stored in content management systems, and accessed by online applications. Traditional storage presents great challenges for online applications:
- Limited scalability and fragmented namespaces
- Difficulty adding capacity with disruptive upgrade cycles
- Long development lead times integrating storage and media management
- Very high upfront costs due to unpredictable adoption rates
- Increased complexity and expense managing data center infrastructure
GeoStratus SDS - How It Works
GeoStratus Storage Delivery Service meets all these new requirements and more. GeoStratus SDS is easy to integrate, easy to scale and easy to control. It includes 3 components:
- GeoStratus Web Services: For a speedy integration and shortened time-to- market, NWS is a standards-based web services API available in SOAP and REST for accessing Internet storage. NWS provides full file system capabilities for managing files and folders, integrates management of end-user accounts, and has built-in media processing functions.
- Internet Media File System : For seamless scalability, IMFS is a Internet-class clustered file system, capable of managing millions of users and billions of files in its single namespace. It maximizes end-user experience with intelligent ingestion and delivery of data on a global basis.
- GeoStratus Management Portal: For greater control and tracking, NMP provides instant insight into service status. The management portal also provides granular monitoring and enforcement of usage policies at all times.
The GeoStratus SDS is backed by a guaranteed service-level agreement (SLA) and includes best-in-class support packages.
